Singapore announced on Friday (Jan 18) that it would buy a “small number” of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for “a full evaluation of their capabilities and suitability before deciding on a full fleet”.
If the sparse 127-word Ministry of Defence (Mindef) statement spread over two paragraphs left you with more questions than answers, you are in good company.
Two key questions remain.
First, is the Lockheed-Martin F-35 — the most advanced warplane that friends of the United States can buy — the chosen one that will replace Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) F-16s?
It is a critical decision as single and double-seat variants of the F-16 are currently the most numerous fighter type in the RSAF.
Literature touting the superiority of the new generation multi-role F-35 inevitably ends up downplaying capabilities of F-16s that were once Lockheed’s best-selling fighter jet.
Second, what is the RSAF’s Plan B if the F-35 fails the evaluation?

SINGAPORE: Glitches in the F-35 will be fixed before the stealth fighter jet is delivered to Singapore, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on Friday (Jun 28).

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II which is a single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters is undergoing final development and testing by the United States.
The Pentagon began the F 35 program in 2001 with an aim to develop a cost-effective replacement for the U.S. military’s F 15, F 16 & F 18 Fighters and reconnaissance aircraft, as well as A 10 close air support warplanes.
Apart from the United States, the primary customer and financial backer, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Turkey, Australia, Norway, and Denmark are also part of the program. Many other nations like Japan and Israel are also deploying the fighters.
S 400 Triumph is an anti-aircraft weapon system developed by Russia’s Almaz Central Design Bureau in the 1990s as an upgrade of the S 300 family. it has been in service with the Russian armed forces since 2007.
It is designed to defend against aircraft including 5th generation stealth fighters, bombers, AWACS, cruise missiles, and ballistic missile.
It is considered one of the most powerful anti-aircraft defense system in the world.
